Steam-set, French silk dye on 100% Habotai silk
27" x 37” silk mounted on 30” x 40” x 2” gessoed canvas framed in a solid wooden frame finished in a rich walnut stain with elm burl.
Five barn swallows sweep and dive across a richly textured landscape, their graceful movements capturing the freedom, energy, and fleeting beauty of flight. Each bird follows its own path, yet together they create a sense of rhythm and connection, a reminder that even as we move through life in different directions, we remain part of something larger than ourselves.
Barn swallows carry powerful symbolism across cultures, often associated with hope, renewal, safe returns, and the promise of home. Known for their remarkable journeys and instinct to return to familiar nesting places, they remind us of our capacity to venture into the unknown while remaining connected to the people, places, and experiences that ground us. Their presence speaks to resilience, the courage to begin again, and the quiet reassurance that we can always find our way back.
The composition unfolds across a dramatic field of wine, hunter green, sapphire blue, emerald, and subtle golden accents. Using a dry-brush wax resist technique, I created intricate areas of negative space that allow the natural luminosity of the silk to emerge. The textured marks evoke the movement of air and the changing currents beneath the birds, creating a visual landscape that feels both spontaneous and intentional. The interplay between the flowing dyes and the wax-resisted details gives the painting its distinctive sense of depth, energy, and movement.
Rise and Return is a celebration of the freedom to explore, the resilience to keep moving forward, and the comfort of knowing that home is never simply a place. It is a connection we carry with us, a source of strength that welcomes us back, again and again.
