The Life We Build
Steam-set, French silk dye on 100% Habotai silk
44" x 30β silk mounted on 48β x 36β x 2β gessoed canvas framed in a solid wooden frame finished in a rich walnut stain with elm burl.
Two great blue herons come together in a moment of quiet devotion, each playing a part in building a nest and creating a future. One gathers and arranges the materials, while the other hovers between flight and landing, bringing movement and possibility to the scene. Together, they embody the beauty of partnership, shared purpose, and the life we create through the choices we make every day.
Throughout many spiritual interpretations, the great blue heron symbolizes patience, wisdom, self-reliance, and the ability to navigate life with grace and intention. In this painting, those qualities take on a deeper meaning. The herons remind us that a meaningful life is not built all at once, but through small acts of care, the willingness to show up for one another, and the courage to keep building even as life continues to change around us.
Behind them, a dreamlike sky unfolds in soft pinks and blues, golden rust, and deep wine tones. A delicate salt-textured effect creates an organic, atmospheric surface, echoing the beautiful unpredictability of nature. Painted on silk, the flowing colors and luminous quality of the fabric bring a sense of movement and life to the composition.
The Life We Build is a reflection on love, partnership, and the quiet, everyday moments that become the foundation of something lasting. It invites us to consider not only what we are building, but who we are building it with.
